Seeing a "low" Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) number on your lab report can trigger immediate panic. The first thing you need to hear is this: a low AMH level is not a pregnancy verdict, nor does it mean natural conception is impossible.
What AMH actually tells us (and what it doesn’t)
AMH is a protein hormone produced by the small follicles in your ovaries. Think of it as a fuel gauge for egg quantity. It helps specialists predict how many eggs your ovaries might release during an IVF stimulation cycle.
Crucially, AMH does not measure egg quality. Egg quality is driven primarily by age, not your AMH score. A 28-year-old with low AMH may retrieve fewer eggs during IVF, but each egg has a much higher likelihood of being genetically normal and resulting in a healthy baby. Conversely, a higher AMH at age 40 means more eggs, but age-related factors still dictate the odds.
Sensible next steps after a low result
Take a deep breath and avoid quick-fix powders: There is no proven diet, herbal supplement, or "fertility tea" that creates new eggs. While balanced nutrition supports general wellness, don’t let marketing prey on your anxiety.
Look at the complete picture: AMH is just one data point. Your specialist must combine it with an ultrasound Antral Follicle Count (AFC), fallopian tube checks, and a semen analysis.
Focus on time, not just the number: Instead of asking "How do I raise my AMH?", the more actionable question is: "Given my age and ovarian reserve, what is our most efficient path forward?"
If you are over 35, have irregular cycles, or have been trying for over six months, bring your reports in for a holistic evaluation so you can build a proactive, personalized plan.
